Description Southern Illinois University helps to train future doctors, dentists, and other other professionals. The university enrolls some 35,000 students at its two institutions -- Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (which includes a School of Medicine) and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (which includes a School of Dental Medicine). The Carbondale campus oversees a university program in Niigata, Japan. The university offers associate, baccalaureate, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees. The university was chartered as a teachers college in 1869.
