The school has an annual enrollment of more than 16,000 students on eight campuses. Eastern Kentucky University was founded in 1906 with a faculty of just seven; in 1909 the school's first graduating class consisted of 11 students. Originally Eastern Kentucky State Normal School, it gained university status in 1966 and began offering graduate degrees in fields other than education.
