Northern Illinois University (NIU) has an enrollment of more than 24,000 students at its flagship campus in DeKalb, and at four satellite centers in Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Rockford, and Oregon. The university offers some 63 undergraduate majors, 79 graduate programs, and 11 doctoral programs in some 40 academic departments at seven degree-granting schools. Founded in 1895, NIU has more than 1,250 faculty members and boasts a student-to-faculty ratio of 17-to-1. Notable alumni include former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Dennis Hastert and Dan Castellaneta, voice of Homer Simpson and others on the long-running television show The Simpsons.
