Description The University of Massachusetts (UMass) has been expanding across the commonwealth since its founding in 1863. About 66,000 students are enrolled in UMass programs that range from art to journalism to engineering. The university's flagship campus in Amherst (with a student-teacher ratio of 18:1) offers its 5,200 students bachelor's degrees in about 90 areas, master's degrees in nearly 70 areas, and doctorates in 50 areas. Its University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester has an affiliated teaching hospital and students studying medicine, nursing, and biomedical sciences. Other UMass campuses can be found in Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell, and online.
