In 1958, East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) began as a small reading group in a local resident's living room. Today, it has grown into a comprehensive after-school program for traditional public school students and a distinguished public charter school network, with a focused mission to significantly raise East Harlem's college graduation rate.
Since its inception, EHTP has supported over 15,000 East Harlem youth and their families, providing not only educational resources but also fostering academic skill development, building confidence, and nurturing a sense of community.
From its roots as a volunteer-run program until the late 1980s, EHTP has evolved into a dynamic organization, reaching over 1,500 scholars annually through a network of initiatives. These include East Harlem Scholars Academies, out-of-school-time and summer programs, the College Scholars program, and the East Harlem Teaching Residency and Fellowship. With a committed team of over 200 staff members and 300 dedicated volunteers, EHTP operates across five locations, creating a lasting impact on East Harlem's educational landscape.
