Description Established in 1952, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) split in 2011. Known for designing and developing the CANDU nuclear power reactor, the company designed and built nuclear reactors and provided services such as construction management, waste management, decommissioning, and life-extension projects related to CANDU reactors worldwide. SNC-Lavalin bought the commercial reactor division of AECL in 2011. The Canadian government retained the company's laboratory operations, which includes two facilities for nuclear technology research and development.
