Southern Research performs contract research in areas such as drug development and discovery, engineering, and environmental and energy issues. The not-for-profit organization launched a life science R&D consulting firm, BioSafety Solutions, in 2008. Clients have included government agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Defense, and NASA as well as corporate clients Mercedes-Benz and Southern Company. SRI tests anti-influenza and anti-HIV drugs for NanoViricides Inc. Founded in 1941, the organization has been affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham since 1999. SRI acquired the assets of BioCryst Pharmaceuticals in 2010.
