Description Founders Nick Tocco and Mike Piccinini opened the first Save Mart store in 1952. Today, The Save Mart Companies is the largest family-owned grocer in California with 207 stores across California and Northern Nevada. It operates under the brands Save Mart, S-Mart Foods, Lucky, Lucky California, FoodMaxx and MaxxValue.

Known for innovation, Save Mart was one of the first supermarkets to bring to customers pre-packaged meats, yard and garden supplies, plants, fresh-cut flowers and gift items … all creative concepts for the 1950’s and relatively unheard of for the area until Save Mart introduced them. Scanning cash registers are typical for today’s supermarket, but Save Mart utilized the most up-to-date cash registers for 1952 when other retailers were working up a bill on a piece of paper and counting out change.

Today, the same innovative spirit lives on. A growing number of our stores offer fresh made tortillas, a Valley Fresco area, featuring fresh California-grown products, and meal solutions for busy families.

While our look and offerings may change over time, our sustainable and charitable giving philosophies remain the same. The Save Mart Companies still practices composting, recycling and reducing our carbon footprint where we can. Customers can feel good about shopping at any one of The Save Mart Companies stores.
