Mission At Green Power, we firmly believe in sustainability as the driver of positive change for all, and we care deeply about making a positive impact on our environment, customer and communities – which is why we’ve made it our mission to power the UK towards a sustainable circular economy.
Each year, we generate 230 GWh of clean energy from food waste, making us the largest anaerobic digestion operator in the UK. But we go further - we have a diverse portfolio of renewable energy production facilities including 33 solar parks, six wind turbines, eight hydro-electric turbines and composting facilities. Altogether, we produce enough renewable energy to power 80,000 homes across the country every day! And we’ve picked up a few awards along the way too.
As a subsidiary of the FTSE 100 company Severn Trent who’s committed to delivering the Triple Carbon Pledge by 2030, we also play a critical role in supporting our parent company to reach this target and tackle the climate change challenge.
As we enter a new growth phase, a career at Green Power is the perfect opportunity for you to stretch your skills and build a fulfilling career.
We’re passionate about investing in our people and supporting their path to success alongside that of our business. But we know a healthy workplace culture matters to you, too – so you’ll be pleased to know we’re a friendly bunch, we enjoy a cuppa and corridor chat, and we love celebrating good work and awesome colleagues.
Description Severn Trent Green Power operates the UK’s leading food waste recycling and green waste composting network.
We provide cost-effective, sustainable organic waste management solutions through our award-winning network of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) and Composting facilities. Our 8 AD facilities and 5 composting facilities span South Wales, Birmingham, Coventry, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Surrey.
We work with 50+ local authorities providing unrivalled food waste recycling solutions to them and numerous businesses across the UK.
As one of the largest food waste recyclers in the country, a quarter of all UK household’s collected food waste, and around 12% of commercial collected food waste, is sent to our AD facilities.
Whether you’re a food waste producer, collector, or Local Authority, we can provide you with a sustainable and quality food waste recycling service that’s cost effective and helps you reduce the impact your operations have on the environment.
In fact, we’ve been refining our processes for more than a decade now, which means you can benefit from the highest quality and most reliable service across our food waste Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facilities in the UK, as well as our award-winning industry experience and knowledge.
We currently work with more than 45 local authorities, plus many waste collection businesses, catering outlets, food manufacturers and retailers. All our sites have robust de-packaging systems, which means we can accept a wide variety of food wastes containing various types of primary and secondary packaging.
And it doesn’t stop there; all the food waste we de-package and digest is turned into renewable energy which fuels UK homes and businesses and nutrient-rich liquid bio-fertiliser which is used by UK farmers to help grow the fruit and vegetables that end up back on our plates
We also recycle more than 120,000 tonnes of green and food waste each year across our five composting sites, all producing a number of premium grade compost products which are used by local farmers, commercial gardeners and our local communities.
We operate two different types of composting facility across Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire -three Open Windrow Composting (OWC) sites that recycle green waste, and two In-Vessel Composting (IVC) sites that recycle a mix of garden and food waste.
Four of our five composting sites are in Oxfordshire and were built to service the long-term garden and food waste requirements of Oxfordshire County Council. We also receive garden waste from landscaping companies and commercial gardeners.
Our fifth composting plant (IVC) in Hertfordshire, was built to service the mix of the garden and food waste recycling requirements of Hertfordshire County Council.
In addition to our food and garden waste recycling services, we own a diverse portfolio of renewable energy production facilities including 33 Solar parks, six wind turbines, and eight hydro-electric turbines. Collectively, we produce 58MW of renewable energy each year - that’s enough to power 115,000 homes.
We currently have eight hydro turbines installed on four sites which produce around 3% of the electricity we generate from renewable sources.
Power is generated when huge volumes of water gush downwards turning a turbine which produces electricity, gravity is essential to this process. Key areas for hydro power production are reservoir dams.
Each of our hydro turbines are connected to the National Grid and the electricity they produce will be used across the business.
We have six wind turbines with four at a maximum of 130m to the tips of the blades. Each turbine generates enough electricity to power around 1,500 homes. In total, our current wind turbines can produce 20,000 MWh every year. This power is exported to the National Grid.
We have enjoyed working with communities near our wind turbines to help them become more environmentally friendly.
We have 33 solar parks across the Severn Trent business, all generating renewable energy that's then used across the Severn Trent Water business to reduce our demand for power from the National Grid. We currently have eight hydro turbines installed on four sites which produce around 3% of the electricity we generate from renewable sources.
