I worked at ABA ROLI full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The people at ROLI are some of the best people I have worked with. They are an inspiring mission-driven group who are always willing to help each other navigate difficulties that may arise. There is a lot of bureaucracy but once you know what you're doing, it is fairly easy to skirt your way around it. Salary and career opportunities have become increasingly transparent thanks to the Deputy Director. ROLI Senior... Management cares about the satisfaction of its employees.

    Cons

Nearly everyone in ROLI is competent and kind. There are a few bad apples who can hinder your work and some directors who clearly lack international development experience.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so afraid to discipline directors who are abusive and incompetent. Hire management that has directly applicable and relevant experience. Flowery resumes and impressive credentials are useless if they have no clue what they are doing. Everything flows down in a division - when things are going awry, it's the director's doing. Consider pushing for a ROLI specific attorney - the ABA at large does not... sufficiently understand our needs. There needs to be more attention paid to the finance team, they are overworked and underpaid.

    I worked at ABA ROLI

    Pros

Everyone is very dedicated to their work, lots of interesting programs, broad reach across many regions,

    Cons

Can be resistant to change, interns tend to be separate from the rest of their division which can limit communication, work can sometimes feel very rushed / last minute.

    Advice to Management

For internships: try to involve the interns more with the rest of their team.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at ABA ROLI full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good people who are passionate about the work. Interesting programs.

    Cons

Dealing with ABA general counsel to get contracts approved is a hassle and take a very long time- often not what it needed in an international development setting when things can quickly change.

    Advice to Management

    Break off from ABA.

I worked at ABA ROLI full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some really great people work here. The mission of the organization is easy to connect with. The quality of programs is very high. There is respect for the communities where they work.

    Cons

Too much bureaucracy. Inadequate compensation. Slow and difficult to navigate promotion system. Lack of transparency with salaries and promotions. Lack of career path and lack of focus on career growth. Don't value loyalty or staff - treatment like everyone is easily replaceable even though hiring takes a very long time. High turnover. Some people will gossip and backstab which felt unhealthy. Benefits not... competitive.

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at ABA ROLI full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Really engaged staff, in D.C. and the field, as well as improving leadership. Challenge in DC is to balance administrative versus programmatic work.

    Cons

Sometimes too much bureaucracy in administering grants, which prevents the organization from maximizing its impact in the field.

I worked at ABA ROLI full-time

    Pros

Didn't have to work hard or long hours.

    Cons

too lax and operations ran on the whims of personalities and individuals rather than rational decisions.

    Advice to Management

pay more attention to what goes on in your field offices and make better hiring decisions for field office directors.
