I worked at AM General full-time

    Pros

They take a lot of people, experience wasn't necessary. They do a good job in training all their employees.

    Cons

Management likes to play favorites at times. Hours can be harsh at times when things really pick up or slow down.

    Advice to Management

It would be nice to see management care for some of the laborers a little more, often felt like they were being neglected.

I have been working at AM General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive pay & great benefits. Leadership in my section takes care of their people. The company has been diversifying the business which helps balance out the volatile industry.

    Cons

No complaints--it's a great job! If I had to add anything I'd say first level managers should make decisions faster. Ask for a recommendation, trust your gut, make the decision and keep it moving!

    Advice to Management

To upper management, get to know & understand your people. This way, many issues can be resolved before they even start.

I have been working at AM General (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company offers longevity, and benefits are good.

    Cons

When asked about how I might advance in my career, my manager's exact response was, "I don't know." Alternatively, he is very attentive to employees higher up the corporate ladder.

    Advice to Management

Consideration and fairness to employees at all levels is important.

    Cons

I worked there for over three months, and still didn't get hired in.

    Advice to Management

Need to increase the starting wage

I worked at AM General full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people. Small company. You get to know all the people you work with. Flexible 9/80 work schedule. Very good healthcare benefits and competitive paid holiday schedule.

    Cons

Resistance to truly adapting industry best practices for product development leads to firefighting. If you are hoping to do your work using the latest software and tools, this is not the place for you. Company is slow to innovate.

    Advice to Management

The new President and Chief Operating Officer would benefit from personally getting to understand their employees' skill sets in addition to relying on consultants to assess strengths and weaknesses. With the strength of the auto industry, it is difficult for the company to retain certain skill sets.

I worked at AM General (More than 10 years)

    Pros

challenging and innovative to get along with for prior militarywork environment, most employees are all easy

    Cons

work is strictly military-contract driven - no contract = no work

    Advice to Management

Keep in mind that you need more than one horse in the race; past performance and customer perception contributes to recent contract losses

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at AM General full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits... Other than that, no good reason anymore. Management can't make decisions and they have no loyalty to their employees anymore.

    Cons

Company seems to spiraling out of control and steadily downsizing without much hope for their design and engineering groups. Becoming a manufacturing only facility and outsourcing everything else.

    Advice to Management

Make decisions, build new vehicles and not just variants of the Humvee and stay loyal to your employees, diversify in more than just manufacturing.

  10. "Emerging to new markets but lacking resources"

I worked at AM General full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The common front line workers really make the company tick with a 'get the job done' mentality. Benefits are very competitive - Much better than most employers in the area! The company is working toward progressive thinking concepts and opening up to new markets and programs to stimulate growth.

    Cons

Leadership has visionary pipe dreams that sound good in the executive conference room but execution of the projects with limited staff already wearing multiple hats makes it challenging to have a sense of accomplishment of a project or task. Employees find themselves with ever changing priorities causing for frustration. Goals and objectives the organization would like to employ need to be realistic and feasible so the employees doing the work can feel a solid sense of satisfaction.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the talents that got the company out of the 2013 slump. More and more good people with historically exemplary performance reviews are leaving the company for jobs with less pay and benefits. You can only work your employees so far before human error takes over resulting in a sense of worthlessness!
