I worked at ASME full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some talented and devoted staff members; smart and dedicated engineers and committed volunteers.

    Cons

Upper Management is so pre-occupied with (ever-changing) "strategy", that it doesn't address ongoing systemic issues like dead-weight employees and problem managers promoted well above their competence and temperaments.

    Advice to Management

You have lost (and will continue to lose) excellent employees (leaving only the content to be mediocre) staff members unless you take your head out of the tar pit.

    I worked at ASME full-time

    Pros

They say a lot of good words about trying to do the right thing by their people, and they seem to want to do that, but...

    Cons

They can't get out of their own way with their inability to change how they do things, which is bloated and slow and bureaucratic for no good reason. They add process for the sake of adding process. They try to change their business model, but it takes them multiple years to devise a plan which is so high level it's impossible to say what it actually means, and when they try to explain what it means, it's clear that the organization doesn't and won't have the ability to make those things happen.

    Advice to Management

You need to understand the types of skills you really need to bring in to accomplish the changes that need to happen.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at ASME full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

My position was perfectly matched for a self-starter and growth potential. ASME had an altruistic beginning which proved the organization's longevity and growth to globalization. They offer diverse products, support environmental situations, and provide public safety.

    Cons

Whilst the organization is currently focused on updating the society, they are by-passing quality for quantity, and disregarding the voice of the customer. The society also needs to seriously provide valuable benefits for the younger engineers and global communities for future sustainability

    Advice to Management

Management should include developing substantial benefits for the domestic and global communities. They should also focus on stronger liaisons with local governments and the codes and standards.

"Cons outweigh the many, many positives"

    Star Star Star Star Star
Former Employee - Manager in New York, NY
Former Employee - Manager in New York, NY

    Pros

    * Generous pay (for nonprofit), benefits and professional development.
    * Good work/life balance. Very few employees stay even 30 minutes past 5 p.m. Consequently turn-over is low and many loyal employees never leave...for better and for worse.
    * The Society's mission and ability to make a difference.
    * Ideal work environment for those with a "go with the flow" (vs. "go getter") attitude, who value process and rules over results, are male and/or mechanical engineers.

    Cons

    * Too many meetings for meeting sake.
    * Mastery of playing politics is rewarded over mastery of one's discipline area and job effectiveness.
    * Expertise is not appreciated. Group think rules. Too many projects are built and managed by committee so ultimately no ONE ever takes responsibility or is blamed, publicly anyway.
    * The CYA culture. ASME is a "good old boys" network with lots of cronyism and relatively few non-ME women high-level execs. Cronyism starts at the top, with a misogynistic and paranoid ED.

    Advice to Management

HR has the best intentions, but their first priority is to protect the status quo. Please hire more (qualified) women and minorities for senior management roles.
