Top Review Highlights by Sentiment
- Former Employee★★★★★
Pros
The company has an incredible reputation for its artistry.
Cons
The role and who I reported too was never made clear.
- Former Employee, less than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
Easy to get hired. Free coffee, free croissants and such on Fridays. Met some nice people there.
Cons
They use their own homemade software that is obsolete and crashes constantly. Some of their senior employees are rude and condescending. Work-life balance is non-existant, so be prepared to stay past the end of your shift every day. OT is paid only when scheduled in advance. Deadlines are ridiculous. People come and go constantly so it's a very unstable place to work at. People either quit or get fired, sometimes for the most ridiculous reasons. Most of their employees are relatively new because of this.
- Former Employee, less than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
Fair paycheck salary for Juniors.
Cons
If you're a foreigner that depends on a Working Visa they will hold you hostage of that and treat you bad, yell at you, blame you of your lack of skill not because you do but because their "software" is HIGHLY outdated and they think it's much better than Maya or 3Ds Max or any other software when in reality its really not and makes working there a living nightmare. They'll remind you constantly how much you suck. Ask you a lot of Over Time that they won't pay you on cash but "free days". They'll fire you the same day if they don't have more work for you or if you're honest about how bad they treat you.
- Former Employee★★★★★
Pros
A lot of to learn
Cons
low salaries, crowdy offices, noise
- Former Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
Good thing about being a generalist at BUF is that you have the oportunity to work and learn a lot of diferent things inside the same project. From 3D modeling, texturing, ambient, etc until the end when you can do the final comp for your shots. The projects are very intresting, nevertheless, from time to time there is nothing to do. Or for the contrary there are way too many shots and not enough hands.
Cons
You can see people in general are tired and scared in there. The way they treat artists is not positive. They have to stay late almost every day to finish the shots, it is curious almost all the time there is no overtime aproved but the bad treatment, almost a threat that you must finish no matter what. People is under paid, over worked and underappreciated, worst part, they are scared to say anything about it. Finally the enviroment in there is not good, people never take a break, it is only work and more work. You never get to know people a lot since there is no chance, no extra activities, forget about beer friday or breakfasts or any benefit that other companies have.

Pros
As a Generalist, you can do any kind of work on a shot. If you're skilled enough, your supervisor will give you shots to do from layout to final compositing. Pipeline, one of the best.
Cons
Expecrienced workers salaries. Projects less and less interessant. Managers.. In-house softwares not really up-to-date with new technologies (but not as bad as often said in the industry)

Pros
- Can work on various areas as BUF has a generalist approach of VFX - Working with people with great artistic skills - Most of BUF's shots are art oriented - Probably the best place to grow as a VFX artist - The production pipeline is very flexible as it's 100 proprietary
Cons
- The working load is intense (more than most of the VFX companies) - Software are proprietary meaning that you have to make efforts to master them - The overall communication should be improved
- Former Employee★★★★★
Pros
Good communication between people. Friendly people and good training.
Cons
Proprietary software. Most functions which take a click in other softwares, takes about a billion clicks. Very unstable and does not have functions most up to date softwares have. Very slow development team

Pros
- a nice atmosphere - nice to work in interesting movies, although the most interesting projects are handled in Paris. - Great team
Cons
- several areas really need to have a better direction, there doesn't seem to be a good communication between the offices from Mtl and Paris.

Pros
I learned the complete pipeline and Linux pretty much all by myself, it will surely help in my future jobs
Cons
There is some stuff to adjust like most communication between artists and supervisors but mostly I just want to do 3D stuff and we do more comp/roto/restore here
