  1. "Great employees, successful old product, lifestyle CEO"

    I worked at BitTorrent full-time

    Pros

Company has always had great engineers. Loved the employees - people really enjoy each other. Main product has stood the test of time with an impressive user base, giving the company stability and relevance. Company always organized fun events and offered great benefits through the years.

    Cons

Low key CEO isn't a real vision type. The only "new" ideas are old features or unoriginal products in overcrowded markets and come from the Board. Came in and killed the only innovative product left and spent months pretending to be friendly to the juvenile co-founder, while telling other people about how he was trying to get rid of him. Company is small but does big company fluff like endless powerpoint slides, company values, culture surveys. Couple of people who always stood up at all hands meetings last year saying how great things were under the co-CEOs (when things were going terribly) are still at Bittorrent saying the exact same things now - that was hard to take.

    Advice to Management

Quick tests on "new" product ideas to validate investment decisions. Be honest and open minded about results that matter and keep adjusting. Stop looking for yes men.

I worked at BitTorrent full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Some good products and some very talented engineers. (in 2015)

    Cons

Pretty much everything was bad. For a small company, there was too much politics, water cooler whispers and overall drama.

Thankfully, one such hallway conversation led me to believe a mass lay off was around the corner, and I was proven right. I jumped ship just before.

I don't think I met a single manager that was useful. Mine was particularly secretive and overly micromanaging. Most ran things like their personal fiefdom as there was no oversight, constantly painting rosy pictures to those above them.

They were quick to blame engineers but did not see that every systemic issue could be traced directly to actions or decisions they took.

    Advice to Management

Get off the gravy train. Go home and don't come back.

If all managers disappeared here, it couldn't possibly make things worse.

    Pros

    - Great team of engineer and coworkers, but most are looking.
    - A vacation/half-way house to find your next job
    - New CEO is awesome
    - Cute dogs

    Cons

    - They're not looking for a partner, they're looking for a mindless lap dog who obeys their master
    - They're looking for multidisciplinary individuals to minimize their own work load
    - Expects you to work independently yet micro manages you every step of the way
    - Management is willing to shoot their own foot for personal gain
    - Management is always scrambling, timelines are always interrupted
    - Too much politics, don't peel behind the layers.
    - Does not believe in a design organization or a marketing organization
    - Getting run over at least once a week by cars trying to get into the Bay Bridge
    - Absolutely no career growth
    - Don't bother standing up for yourself

    Advice to Management

    Bless your heart.

I have been working at BitTorrent full-time

    Pros

Always too much to do - which keeps everyone busy, and work not boring
Above market pay to deal with the cons

    Cons

Bad management - from middle management on up! They traded one ceo for 2 co-ceos (who thinks that was a good idea?) then put the CFO in charge that isn't a leader or understanding of the business!

    Lack clarity within the organization
Everyone is fearful of losing their job and good salary so almost all management will fold
HR doesn't want to track employee performance (so there is no paper trail)
HR doesn't write anything down for complaints (so there is no paper trail)
Rehiring of former employees that were let go for some reason yet are right for the job now
    Unrealistic expectations of performance

    Advice to Management

This used to be a place known for high-quality engineering, innovation, etc. What happened?
Even your vendors are complaining about the employees.

Take care of the people you still have left, get rid of the politics, build a plan everyone can believe in, and it needs to be beyond P2P and pushing more ads everywhere.
It's okay to take a slow path to rebuilding and making the right hires.

    Best of luck!

    Pros

    Great people to work with.
Interesting projects with small teams so you wear whatever hat is needed.
    Fun and relaxing environment.

    Cons

Recently the company has had trouble monetizing its products which rarely come to fruition or become profitable so it has done multiple cycles of lay offs. Job security may be an issue.

I have been working at BitTorrent full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good snacks
    Decent pay and benefits
Some smart engineers (but almost all of them are looking)

    Cons

No one thought it could get worse than the co-CEO situation with DJS. We were wrong. The current situation with a weak and spineless interim CEO who is totally controlled by a very political general counsel is in fact much worse.

A single investor owns a huge percentage (way over half) of the stock.

    Advice to Management

Try and find a real CEO (do not bring back a former CEO who had their chance and failed). Chances are no one competent wants the job. So when you can't find a real CEO then:

Sell the uTorrent/BitTorrent client business before the user base erodes further its value shrinks.

Sell BitTorrent Live before the whole team quits.

Outsource HR, accounting, and legal. There is no reason a company this small (and shrinking) keeps all those functions in house. Legal and accounting are the source of most of the office politics.

There was nothing positive here other than several very intelligent peers.

    Cons

Controlled by the investors, juvenile founder, and deceitful CFO, CEO. Horrible HR. Co-CEOs were a disaster and the board dysfunctional.

    Advice to Management

    Resign.
