Don't be fooled by this "start-up"

Pros

I have to preface this review by saying that the people who work at Bookspan are some of the most talented, friendly and qualified coworkers I have ever encountered. This is an incredible group of people.

Cons

The CEO, John Lippman, and the COO, Blake Orlandi, are running this company into the ground. They micromanage everything until the creative spark is completely gone and create a general vibe that they do not respect your professional background and certainly do not trust you enough to do your job without their overseeing every move. This mentality makes doing even the smallest of tasks be much more difficult and time consuming than it should. Similarly, they do not respect their employees to loop them in on major company structural changes and cultivate an air of secrecy. This contributes to their distrust in everyone, most significantly their employees. They have completely tarnished the once fabulous workplace morale that this company had, and have made it miserable to work for them day to day. The turnaround rate here is REALLY high. The worst part is, then they don't rehire to fill those vacant positions because they assume that everyone else can cover those jobs. If you are not working 12 hour days (and are on call at all hours-- weekends and vacation days included), then you're not working hard enough or long enough and therefore can handle more work. I have never seen a company with such little respect for their employees. It is disheartening. Don’t be fooled by the "start-up mentality" facade— working at Bookspan is incredibly anxiety inducing. The turnaround rate here is really high for good reason.

Good People, BAD Management

Pros

-It's so disorganized, you'll learn a little bit about everything, because you have to. -The people that work there are great and all bond over disliking the foolish executives. It's sort of like being on The Office, but if Steve Carell's character were extremely insecure and conniving. -Free books!

Cons

-There is a clear divide between the old guard (people that have worked at BOM for 10+ years) and the new guard (executives). Because of this morale is severely depressed. People seethe hatred regarding upper management, and it's infectious. -Everyone is in the dark about big and little changes except the CEO, COO, CTO, which feeds into an illusion of secrecy. It makes you feel as if sketchy things are taking place. - The CEO, COO, and CTO don't seem to have adequate management or people skills. I've never seen people cry on a job as much as I did here. -Promises are made but never kept from everything from salary review, job title changes, to holding a weekly meeting. -If a newcomer is hired by old staff expect to have a proper on-boarding. If hired by newer staff, expect to not know what is going on for weeks, including what your daily tasks are. (I cannot comment on the engineering team, but my general observation is that the CTO is more in touch with her team on this and other aspects of the job.) -You'll start a project and never see the results, which is really, really frustrating. This can also be attributed to executives changing their mind on dime.
