I worked at Butler County MetroParks Rangers full-time

    Pros

A lot of freedom to interact with park visitors and do what you want to do. Dedicated people who want to make a difference. Explosive growth and diversity across county. Fun job if left alone to patrol and do job.

    Cons

Severely understaffed. Director/CEO is uncaring about employees and creates a toxic work environment with and through his senior managers. High turnover rate in all departments that hasn't been addressed for many years. Does not want Rangers to do police work unless it benefits one of his personal goals. More than 6 Chiefs in 10 years because of Director. Constant threats to remove and replace employees. No opportunities for advancement or additional assignments.

    Advice to Management

Professional management training is a must for all senior management. Learn to look inward and accept responsibility for your actions.

I have been working at Butler County MetroParks Rangers part-time

    Pros

Good supervisors that care about their people. Good part time pay.

    Cons

A lot of events cut into patrol time. Events are long days. Limited to 28 hours per week.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more people

I worked at Butler County MetroParks Rangers (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Being outdoors, freedom to roam the county, public, coworkers, doing nothing for 8 hours a day

    Cons

Been through 5 chiefs in 7 years, seriously lacking REAL management, supervisors are clueless and uncaring, management are never around, revolving door policy, will remind you that you can be replaced in a day

    Advice to Management

Learn the names of the non-management employees (Really? It is embarrassing not to even recognizing the people you have working for you). Listen to the employees (You will have a better chance of avoiding mutinies and 5 people quitting in the same day). Maybe some supervisor classes would help curb your inabilities to lead effectively.
