I worked at Colas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Colas really does take great care of their employees. The benefits are great and, if you apply yourself and are willing to move, there are opportunities all over the world at Colas.

    Cons

In the US, the pay is a bit lower compared to similar jobs around the country. However, the benefits and work/life balance, as well as company loyalty, balances the scale.

    Advice to Management

Keep moving forward in modernizing internal processes and benefits as well as external innovation.

    Pros

    Good Comp and decent hours.

    Cons

Management was disrespectful, careless, and lazy.

I worked at Colas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Overall - OK way to get started in IT, decent people in the immediate vicinity.

    - IS is a great introduction to Corporate IT - it doesn't sugar coat anything but will give you a shot even without a bulk of experience.

    - The "Rockstar" IT culture is slowly starting to emerge - parties can be pretty fun and mgmt is very straightforward with feedback and needs. People seem rather tired and burnt out but do their best not to take it out on the support desk, which is likely more than can be said many other places.

-My immediate manager on the support desk was remarkably supportive, invested in the team.

    -$ is decent

    - might be a good way to get out of programming and into the business side of operations, if thats what one is looking for

    Cons

Overall - mediocore-at-best worklife balance, innovation is a buzzword not a culture, expectations vary.

-Work-life balance is extremely do as I say, not as I do. I was told to make sure I only did 40 hrs a week but saw most of my coworkers there early and late, as well as coming in on weekends. I was regularly behind on expectations (maybe I was just dumb?)

-Suffocating lack of opportunities to learn technology that doesnt have an immediate business impact, which pigeon holes you professionally. I used to bring up one of the industry's most popular languages (python) on the regular and I was mocked/reprimanded for "bringing up crazy start up stuff" instead of being given a chance to prove its use.

-People dread travel because of the amount of work they do

-Thinly vield contempt constantly pours in from management in the form of anger at deadlines, a desire NOT to work in iterations but for everything to come out right the first time. This came from upper management and office workers, anyone busting their butt in the field was a pleasure to work with.

    - Support desk always stinks, so take the above with a grain of salt

    Advice to Management

Keep trying to set proper boundaries w management and working towards Agile methodologies. If possible, offer more diverse options to hard working youngsters on the support desk, most are just discovering what they like. Keep expectations clear and flexible. Get a Pluralsight/Lynda account and allow people to grow intellectually - stop being scared of that.

I worked at Colas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The hours are predictable and you will not be overworked. The people are a lot of fun, the atmosphere is pretty laid back and informal.

    Cons

Despite the company's large size, there isn't much room for upward mobility. The US-based IT dept is just too small.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I worked at Colas (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you're part of the country club culture you will rise within the organization but if you are not, good luck. The French influence is good and bad. The good first....they value their natural resources (aggregates, equipment). The bad...they don't value their people.

    Cons

As I commented above, they run a country club environment.

    Advice to Management

Cut out the country club culture in Sully Miller.

Shut down operations in Mozambique due to business environment. Networking still an issue. Decision making too up the chain but overall freedom to staff on their sector...

    Advice to Management

    All good relationship
