Phony and toxic

Pros

Get to work with lots of cool people with different expertise, lots of collaboration and you get to learn a lot. I enjoy the free educational resources and the mentorship I’ve received from some supervisors.

Cons

Really fake, people will say they’re listening to you, but then pretend like you never asked them anything. Lots of people jumped ship about a year ago and they’ve been leaving ever since. They have this outward experience of being shiny happy smiley people, but inwardly the culture is petty and toxic. There’s been several group therapists that have left right after their internship because they didn’t feel heard or valued. And then there were lots of people who were basically forced out, mostly because they were minorities or for other reasons that didn’t have anything to do with their job performance. Basically all the staff are white and pretend to care about DEI but you won’t find many people who are diverse here, lots of micro aggressions towards minorities. Other people I know have applied here and haven’t gotten the position not because they’re not good at what they do but because they don’t have a certain “look”. People get hired because of how they look and how easily they can be controlled. Pretty shady and toxic leadership.

We take staff feedback seriously and are dedicated to our mission of providing the best evidence-based care for our patients. We continuously improve our processes and our culture, and we are proud that over a third of our staff identify as people of color. Our hiring practices are in place to reduce bias and increase access for all, and we are dedicated to creating an equitable working environment. We highly recommend that staff connect with their dedicated HR partner with concerns.

Pros

Great place to learn and grow clinically, maybe not professionally - offer really great CE's to staff for free, trying to offer more professional development things through a new learning platform, though I don't even think my manager or their leaders have bothered to take them. You definitely will know how to use CBT, DBT, ACT within 6 months of joining here. Love the patient populations I get to serve.

Cons

Every time the founders/senior exec leaders speak, it sounds so phony. They just did these meetings and it was hard to trust anything they were saying. In that it's hard to adapt to changes or additional asks from the top down when you don't trust the top. Also, health benefits are terrible, I have to go on my partners and change doctors because we just can't afford it. Also - while I love the values the Company has and truly bring up at every chance they can starting on day 1; it does not seem like my manager, or other directors and up "act in alignment" with the company's values in how they give feedback to each other and their staff. Fairly toxic.

Feels like constant growing pains

Pros

-This place puts a large emphasis on implementing evidence based interventions. They will take the time to help you learn DBT, CBT, and ACT before they put you out there in front of clients. In general, this model of treatment seems effective. -The pay is far better than other entry level, post master's positions (especially compared to community mental health positions). -The hours are AMAZING. Monday through Friday, roughly 8ish to 4ish. Great for worklife balance.

Cons

-First and foremost, this place is white, white, white. Every clinician except for one on my team is white-- and you can sense the effects. The team mostly comes from similar backgrounds, and it makes the work environment feel... stale? I was not used to this as a social worker. -Speaking of, this is way more of a mental health/ counseling/ therapy job than social work. There is no community work here, it is all veryyy contained within the walls of the clinic located in one of Chicago's most suburban-esque neighborhoods. -They only take private insurance for clients!! It's really weird to be a social worker employed at somewhere that does not provide services to all clients. -People are stressed here, which is odd because the actual scope of responsibilities is not huge. However, there is a lot of pressure to perform things "the compass way." Group therapists tend to feel really underappreciated (this is always the case with folks at the lower end of the hierarchy, but still worth noting). -They are expanding rapidly, and the recruiting team does an excellent job getting you started right away-- BUT it feels like its expanding too quickly. It does not feel like Compass has all of the infrastructure in place to do this effectively. Many teams are made up almost entirely of people who have been there for under a year. This makes the whole thing feel like its built on a foundation of shifting sand. -Overall, the vibe is just weird, due to the stuff mentioned above. Seems like a good place to be for a bit, but it is hard to imagine staying there long term.
