    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Durham County full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    This company offers excellent benefits.

    Cons

The company is very unorganized and gives unreasonable deadlines for the amount of work given.

    Advice to Management

Should be required to take training classes to learn how to process an application.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Durham County full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Health care and retirement benefits.

    Cons

Upper management is megalomaniacal and vindictive when someone tries to make a suggestion they do not like. They move people around, punish them by putting them in positions for which they are not trained, and make them work more weekends and evenings if they say something management does not like. It is demoralizing to know that your skills and hard work are meaningless and only kowtowing to management matters.

    Advice to Management

    Remove upper library management.

I worked at Durham County (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The only pros are the salary and benefits. They are the only reason to work here.

    Cons

You will be treated like a thing and not a person. You will be mentally and emotionally abused by management. You will not be valued. You will be stressed and depressed every day that you work here. That is why the salary and benefits are so good. There is no other way to keep people due to the fact that the management believes employees are to be treated as children, locked down, and not allowed to think for themselves.

    Advice to Management

Clean house and hire management that have some clue how to interact with people instead of passive aggressive people who will change deadlines on a daily basis to keep staff on their toes.

I worked at Durham County full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay isn't bad, great benefits and state retirement. County contributes 5% of salary automatically to 401K

    Cons

Poor Management. People in positions that have no training or placed in the position because of who they know.

    Advice to Management

    Get rid of the problem!

    Pros

The job is great. The ability to interact with the citizens of Durham has been phenomenal. The benefits are great too!

    Cons

There are so many interoffice politics that bring down the morale and the ability to getting the job done (the right way). The pay is not great compared to neighboring counties.

    Advice to Management

Seek out fresh talent that wants to increase the level of work completion. Not listening and/or replacing those who are unprofessional and unwilling to stop the drama will keep your department on a slow crash route.

I worked at Durham County full-time

    Pros

The pay, benefits, and retirement contributions and match are above average. Ability to work flexible schedules in some department is a perk.

    Cons

Management staff needs more training in basic supervision, appropriate discipline, conflict resolution, and building moral.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate the complaints of valuable staff who are complaining while employed and those exiting. Address long standing issues with lack of training for management staff.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Durham County full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Really cannot beat the benefits. When I left, I had about 500 hours of sick time accumulated. If you only cover yourself, the health benefits are basically free. if you live in Durham, the location is pretty much ideal.

    Cons

Benefits are great; salary is not unless you are upper management (like Director level or right below). It seems like when people leave from a department, they do not immediate replace those individuals and tend to redistribute the work amongst the remaining employees which can cause some employees to be overwhelmed with work which decreases employee morale.

    Advice to Management

Address the human capital issue and do not expect employees to have to go above and beyond without proper recognition and/or compensation. "Other duties as assigned" should not be used in an abusive manner.

    Pros

Great benefits. Stable. Retirement and health plans top-notch.

    Cons

The Board of County Commissioners are more about themselves versus the people. Need new blood.

    Advice to Management

Encourage mentorship, succession planning that is valued and effective.

    Pros

The benefit package is good with a matching 401k and LGEERS program.
You are given a choice of 3 levels of coverage for insurance.

    Cons

Very difficult to get things accomplished because of the different levels politics involved.
Some employees have become very complacent and are satisfied with how things are just because that's "how it's always been."
Pay freeze that has been in effect for several years (except for County Manager who recently gave himself a raise)
Advancement is all about "who you know" and if you are willing to play the political game.

    Advice to Management

Take the ideas and thoughts of your employees into consideration.
Work harder at developing work plans and advancement paths for employees. Every department/role should have a career path.

"Decent Organization - Lack of Vision"

    Pros

Good people working hard for the citizens of Durham County. Good benefits. Solid financial footing. Unlikely to be laid off.

    Cons

The organization is stagnant and doesn't learn from its mistakes. Like many government organizations, it's too bureaucratized. There's too much activity and not enough output.

    Advice to Management

Take some time to reflect on decisions that are being made so that the same mistakes aren't repeated time after time. Focus on fixing the systemic issues instead of firing a cog.
