Pros

Stability - layoffs aren't rare, but they aren't common either. Do your job, don't call attention to yourself in any way, and you'll survive.

Cons

Management is awful. The company is managed by a person who does not care about his employees. Lower management are really only pawns for the COO, Hours - prepare to work from 6AM - 530PM routinely, without a break. I'm not saying they don't allow you a lunch break, but they are rarely taken by other employees and you will not be looked upon highly if you do take one. Many days you can expect to work 12 hour shifts. The company will not pay you overtime for these extra hours because you are an exempt, salaried employee. Pay - The starting salary is below average for full-time meteorologists. The raises are mostly based upon performance reviews, which are inconsistently carried out by management.

Pros

Good atmosphere - management had a lot of faith in employees to work within their area of expertise (like zero micromanaging), and for most people it worked really well. Definitely a good fit for people who are self motivated (and not a great fit for those who aren't). People are generally motivated to work hard, but not past a work-life balance. People there, including management, are kind and easy to get along with. The CEO is very thoughtful and makes a real effort to get to know everyone - and he's especially respectful of each individual's area of expertise.

Cons

Wasn't a huge fan of the open-office environment, although it helped to have a lot of meeting rooms available - for meetings and sometimes just a quiet place to work. Now that they've joined forces with a larger company, there is some level of 'bureaucracy', although I'd stress that's a real minor issue.

Pros

There are some leaders in the company that want to see you thrive. They will mentor you and care about your growth. Telecommuting is pretty big with 1/2 days per week + after training you can live anywhere in the US. Interesting work moving the commercial shipping industry from point a to point b, and each vessel provides a unique and challenging situation. It is a very rewarding job. This is the type of job for a new grad who wants to gain some experience on their resume before moving to another company.

Cons

Little involvement of weather knowledge. There are some employees who will do everything to bring you down, and hold you down. This creates a negative work environment. Some managers are completely incompetent - you will quickly realize this. Pay is dismal, and Bergan HQ is calling all the shots - choosing profits over safety. Hours are rotating, and even with seniority you must still work nights. Pay increases are very low, must work overtime to live in the area.
