Pros
You will work with some diligent, empathetic, hard-working students.
Cons
Highly recommend against working here or sending your child to this school. There is a disconnect between what is best for the students and what is best for BASIS. Being that they are a for-profit charter, everything is viewed through a marketing or promotional lens. It doesn't matter if it's what's best for the student - if it makes the school look good, students will be required to do it, Teachers will be forced to cover other teacher's periods when there is an absence. There is a sign in and sign out sheet, allowing them to micromanage your presence on campus. The professional development is pitiful. They do not employ a counselor or a nurse, putting a burden on teachers to support students beyong the realm of academic support. Policies like not serving a school lunch or not having busses demonstrate their lack of commitment to create a system that is student-centered and takes on students from all walks of life as a charter. The students who succeed at BASIS 100% will also succeed elsewhere. For parents, I suggest removing your child from the school before they burn out in the 8th grade. Before then, it can be useful. High school is where it will fall apart for them. Find a school that won't force them to take APs they may not want to take, a school that offers a variety of sports along with the resources and facilities, clubs that offer the same. For teachers, you can find another school that is more supportive of staff, doesn't micromanage, and advocates for you. Becky Trower will smile in your face while trying to make sure you make the least amount of money possible.
