Pros

Mission is great and the work itself was enjoyable; with it being such a small organization, employees are able to directly contribute to overall development of organization.

Cons

Very unhealthy work environment with extremely high turnover rate. Employees are expected to work quietly at desks - small talk is highly frowned upon and lunch breaks are discouraged. Very long hours. Leaving on time at 7pm will reflect on you negatively. Management has very high/unrealistic expectations for performance, provides a lot of negative feedback, and does not balance with any positive reinforcement. Management both distances themselves from the rest of the team while micro-managing at the same time. Underlying bully behavior in how employees are treated. When employees voice concerns or opinions about how to improve the work culture, the party-line response is: this is what you signed up for and it is not your place to tell us (management) how to run the organization.

Pros

As most reviews have mentioned, the workshops are the highlight of working here. Watching students with no prior programming background write their first line of code is extremely rewarding not just for students but staff as well. Having students genuinely see computer programming as a viable path is very rewarding. CodeNow is not your typical non-profit and thats a good thing. At CodeNow employees get the opportunity to see how the company functions. Employees are not pigeoned to just their main responsibilities and are encouraged to explore what their colleagues are working on and assist where they can. Not many companies can attest to that. Employees get to truly see how interconnected they all are. Management is open to ideas and frequently encourages feedback from employees. This feedback mechanism creates a very welcoming environment as employees are free to discus concerns with management without fear.

Cons

Working here can be psychologically taxing at times. Given the small number of people on the team and the amount of work that needs to be done, it is a constant struggle for balance. Management does its best to alleviate stress for employees but there is still alot of work
