Pros

I am near my one year anniversary working in this shop. To my experience, I have had my ups and downs in this job. The sales associate job is a highly relationship based sales position job and also the job that requires attention to customers detail, concerns, and specific questions. You will be asked lots of questions on make up, lotion, beauty products, candy, and alcohol. You also need to deliver bonded products of alcohol and tobacco purchases made by International ticketed customers to the jetbridge. If you truly love working in retail and do not mind the boredom at low season such as September and February, this job is for you. Occasionally, during appreciation week you will have a perfume as a gift for your appreciation from the manager. Also, the general manager is very kind and down to earth, if you follow the rules, show up to work on time, and have a good and long lasting relationship and respect to co workers and supervisors. You do get sick days accrual.

Cons

Since this job requires joining a union, dues are subtracted from your paycheck. It is $25 union fee deducted per paycheck, paid out every two weeks. Another would be the health benefits, which was not included in my plan working full time even after the probation period, deducting $30 per paycheck period. I also am not satisfied with Delta Airlines gate agents being rude to Duty Free Store workers who need to deliver bonded products to the jetway as a mandated requirement, and add to the frustration that if an International flight is delayed after the store closes or canceled, customers would have to return to the store to get a refund. We are liable if we don’t communicate. Communication is key and you do not want to get disciplined by your managers for that. Also, I do not believe there is growth to working in retail as products and sales are rapidly evolving and changing.
