Pros
The location is excellent and very convenient for commuting and daily life. The school also offers postdoc housing support, which can significantly reduce your living expenses in New York City.
Being a medical school directly connected to a hospital creates outstanding opportunities for clinical collaboration. Researchers have access to human disease tissue, making it much easier to translate basic science findings into medically relevant studies.
The research community at Icahn School of Medicine is a genuine highlight. Most researchers are approachable, professional, and easy to work with, which makes for a positive and productive work environment.
Cons
The internal IT and procurement system can be frustrating to work with. The shopping and ordering platform has notable issues that can slow down your workflow, and while there has been gradual improvement over time, it still lacks the reliability and polish you would expect from a major research institution. The in-building delivery system can also cause occasional problems. Lost packages are rare, but when it happens at a critical moment, such as when you urgently need a reagent that week, it can significantly disrupt your experiment.
The postdoc salary is on the lower end compared to other institutes in New York City. While the housing support does help offset the high cost of living, the base compensation alone may still feel limiting given the city's expenses.
