Pros

- Very good tech support staff willing to share information and support business lines - Decent trading infrastructure despite occasional reliability issues - Excellent post trade processing - Movement within the firm is possible only if politically connected - Fairly focused business model (can be a pro and a con)

Cons

- Highly political, play football with Velli and you're safe. - Current obsession to position the firm for an IPO has led to a pattern of older, highly competent, personnel to be let go. - They tend to follow any technology trend by about 6 months - Zero appetite for any risk, yet believe returns should remain at high levels - Non existent employee feedback unless you're fired. - Reliance on a small number of large clients - Little mobility within the firm. (Hey Joe, Of the 15 or so people (all age 45+) you've fired in the past year NONE of them had the ability to work in another area??? - No clear policy on when someone does get fired if they get to hang around in an office for a while or be out the door in 10 minutes? Again, the football thing makes all the difference.

Pros

I had an incredible summer interning at Convergex. The company culture stresses hard work, yet also focuses on maintaining a positive outlook internally. With remarkable new management, who is eager to work with everyone throughout the firm, it is certain the company is headed in the right direction. The employees were welcoming and encouraging, also open to helping out the interns and explaining the several facets that make up the financial services world. I learned more than I ever thought I would, and recommend it to anyone who thinks that may be even slightly interested in finance (in particular sales and trading). You won't regret it!

Cons

There were truly no cons to the internship program. The intern coordinators/team were always ensuring that our experience was going well, and allowed us to meet with any group or individual in the company. In fact, we rotated weekly among different groups- from the sales and trading desk, marketing, credit and risk, and so forth. However, perhaps lengthening the internship or providing each intern with a personal project to present at the end would be helpful! Otherwise, I have no complaints.
