Pros

Tons of truly great people work here. The overall vision is sound which makes its flawed execution even more frustrating.

Cons

Disorganization abounds across all sectors of the company. A frenzied approach to setting goals and tackling initiatives leads lots of “motion”, but little tangible success. The loudest and most arrogant voices get the most attention, and clumsily set the pace for the rest. Burnout has set in across the entire company. Both long term employees and even some fresh faces are already departing or questioning their future with this company. The only people remaining are the toxic ones, the ones with some optimism left to spend, or the people who have been caught off guard by just how misaligned their perceptions were with the reality of the situation.

I treat feedback as a gift and this is well written, thoughtful and provides a tangible solution. You and your team all want and deserve an environment where you can do the best work of your careers. It is my obligation to make this a reality. First, I agree that we have amazing people. The team is incredibly bright, motivated and collaborative. I also agree we need to do a better job on goal setting and measurement. I want everyone to understand why what we do is important, delineate goals that are collectively set and empower everyone to make decisions and debate based on mutually agreed to, measurable objectives. I agree that “management by talking the loudest” is a recipe for disaster and will fix this. I will personally commit to making changes in the way we communicate and set goals as there is no better use of my time than to make sure we are headed in the same direction. That said, I also need your commitment to report these incidents to your manager. Second, while I’m honored that the team is willing to run so hard that there is burnout, let me be very clear: that is not the outcome we want. We are playing the long game and a well rested team that achieves work/life balance is more creative, productive and collaborative. If you are feeling burnt out or notice somebody else who is, please speak with your manager. I will commit to guiding the leadership team to be proactive about identifying and preventing burnout. While I agree we must address your first two points, I disagree with your third. We have an AMAZING team, which is the reason why we’ve achieved so much: we are the fastest growing CRM company in the world and one of the fastest growing SaaS companies with a regrettable attrition rate in the lowest decile. I acknowledge there are always outliers that we must swiftly act on to change behaviors. However, as our team grows past 200, the responsibility to identify and correct these behaviors falls equally on the management team and you. One of our core values is being great at giving and receiving feedback and I will commit to holding everyone, including myself and the leadership team, to embody that standard. I want to thank you again for your feedback. I know it comes from a good place. You want the company, your colleagues and yourself to be successful. I have made several commitments here that I expect everyone to hold me accountable for. I take it as my personal obligation to see that the team is successful by creating an environment where everyone can do the best work of their lives. Jon Lee, CEO/Co-founder
