Fantastic Company Culture, Great Benefits & Room for Vertical Growth - Senior Auditor Cotton Employee Review

Pros

Company culture is outstanding - partners are incredibly open and honest with employees, and employees have many opportunities to work directly with management and partners on clients, committees, proposals, and many other avenues. Vertical growth is dependent primarily on capabilities, and partners will actively look to promote individuals who are dedicated, hardworking and determined. Aggressive company growth affords opportunities for individuals looking to fast track their careers, and the company provides an incredibly comprehensive benefit package including generous base pay salaries and opportunities for bonuses depending on your group. Cotton's highly specialized nature often involves direct competition with the Big 4 and top 10 accounting firms for engagements and contracts.

Cons

Individuals with strong technical capabilities are sometimes promoted without the relevant management capabilities. Additionally, while federal audit is growing incredibly fast, it's also very niche and transition to different industries and careers can be difficult after 5 or more years in federal accounting.

Pros

- Cotton has competitive pay and offers flexible work schedules whenever engagements allow. - One of the best things at Cotton is that you are in charge of your success. Promotions are performance-based rather than seniority-based. - Cotton does its best to ensure their employees are happy and growing professionally. - Cotton does its best to adhere to its core values and principles, including work-life balance. - Cotton’s commitment to quality and professionalism is evidenced by the fact that it voluntarily undergoes a peer review every year, rather than the minimal every three years. - Cotton continuously strives to give back to not only the community via The Giving Committee which supports volunteer services and charitable giving, but also, Cotton’s Sustainability Initiative which focuses on sustainability and environmentally-friendly activities.

Cons

While the first half of this is a con, Cottons handling of these situations can also be seen as a pro. Your experience at Cotton will be directly linked with both the client and team you are assigned to. While I’ve had many positive experiences with both as discussed above, I’ve also had assignments and teams that made me dread coming into work every single day. Most partners and managers at Cotton are highly competent and lead by example, but unfortunately that is not the case for all. If you find yourself working under a partner or manager that does not understand the company's core value of 'Balance,' it’s important to communicate that to your advisor or anyone you feel comfortable speaking to in a position of influence. If possible, changes will be made in order to retain you.
