      Pros

      Getting to show up to work and live out my values each day is a great privelege, I love that I get to work with people who genuinely want to live out their beliefs and create a better community for everyone. You're responsible for setting your own schedule and calendar, which can be a tough thing to get used to at first but gives me a lot of flexibility to be able to balance family responsibilities with work. I also get to be a part of making some big changes in my community and I love that that's something I can make a career of. The pay & benefits are also on-par or above a lot of other similar community organizing work

      Cons

      The job can be pretty demanding at times, some of the busy weeks can be 50+ hours. It can also be just overall tough and emotionally draining at times, you hear a lot of tough stories from community members about the injustices they face, and while we do get tangible wins on the issues, the change we're looking for can take a long time and there's often a LOT of resistance from those in power. Being able to find ways to process that outside of work has been really important for me. There's a lot of things in this job that happen that are completely outside of your control, which can be frustrating and a challenge to figure out how to shift plans around to deal with

      The work/life balance can be a challenge, but with proper training and support this can be overcome!

      Pros

      -With my local organization, we were able to pass policies that make real changes to my community   -Have strong life long friendships with fellow organizers locally and from other counties -Saw people get more and more engaged in their community and realize that they can be effective -Built relationships with people from all throughout the County, connecting people together and seeing them develop genuine relationships. I still have relationships with people from years ago -Having worked in other organizing networks that rely solely on learning "in the field" and from doing the work, I feel like I got a lot of training and attention from experienced organizers  (especially in my first year) and had ongoing support when needed

      Cons

      -Difficult to balance a lot of moving pieces at once takes a lot of planning and prioritizing.  -Have to raise your own salary, so fundraising or delegating fundraising has to be a priority -Have to find ways to stay motivated, especially as volunteer leaders are not always going to follow through and its difficult to feel like the work you put into a campaign does not bear the fruit you want it to  -Need to be speak up for yourself, draw boundaries, adjust plans when you need more time for projects, and say no to things so that you don't burn out

      It is powerful to hear that you still have relationships with people from years ago and that you got to be a part of helping folks to realize they can make a difference in their community. Forming these deep connections is such a special part of the work and we are glad you've found such purpose in it.
