The CEO was too proud to be lose controlling interest of his company, so a merger fell through that caused massive layoffs and was eventually bought out anyway, at about 1/10th of the original merger offer. After I finished my project and filed a patent, they saw me as unnecessary and laid me off almost immediately, despite a verbal offer to stay for much longer.
