Pros

⁃ Engineers are experienced and genuinely interested in building a good product; ⁃ Your work can impact millions of users; ⁃ Everyone is highly motivated and hardworking, even if that motivation is sometimes driven by fear.

Cons

⁃ Engineering problem-solving is CTO top-down, so you won’t learn much about solid architecture thinking or outcome-driven delivery, you’ll mostly learn how to survive at Flo; ⁃ Lack of strong leader managers who can be trusted; ⁃ On a personal level, it really is a toxic workplace without trust or mutual respect. Many colleagues stay because of compensation or visa, but I did not see anyone truly enjoying their work.

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We appreciate you highlighting the impact of the work and the dedication of the engineering team - these are important aspects of how we operate. We’re sorry that your experience did not reflect the environment we aim to create. Building a culture where people feel respected, supported, and able to do their best work is a priority for us, and we recognise the importance of making this consistent across teams. On the engineering side, we explicitly allocate ~20% of each team’s capacity to technical work, including reducing technical debt, and this is protected in planning. Teams can increase this allocation where needed, and some already do. In addition, we run cross-team migration initiatives to address systemic debt in a scalable way, aligned with our engineering strategy. That said, prioritisation of technical debt and architectural decisions is an ongoing balance. We continue to evolve how teams surface, discuss, and drive these decisions to better support both immediate delivery and long-term quality. We value candid feedback like this, as it helps us identify where we need to keep improving.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We are pleased to hear that the passion our designers have for their craft is evident in their work. We recognise the importance of balancing business goals with the user-centric experience that defines our mission. We also want to take this opportunity to address your concerns about representation. While our company was founded by men, Flo is majority female in it's total headcount, majority female in its management population, majority female in direct reports to the CEO, and at gender parity at the Board of Directors. We remain committed to ensuring that women’s voices continue to define the future of our product and our company. We appreciate the time you spent with us and wish you the very best in your future career.
