Pros

Fair salaries. Your experience will greatly depend on who your manager is and what department you're in.

Cons

So much micro-aggression in the way people communicate with each other. Not a friendly environment. There are many big egos. Some people use the “courageous communication” value as an excuse to be a jerk. There appears to be a lack of trust within the organization because of that. Things seem to be better in some departments, where the leaders have more empathy. The culture overall can feel very "tech bro" and did not feel inclusive to those who don't fit that mold. Expectations are high, which can be a good thing, but if you get behind on something it can be impossible to catch up without extreme burnout. Senior leaders have recently left because of this. Like others have mentioned, you need to be in the right place in life to thrive here - didn't feel very family friendly. Somewhat standard working hours, but it was common to see people working insane amounts of overtime (evenings, weekends). Not very flexible. Pattern of micromanagement throughout the company, seemingly originating from senior leadership. Unlimited PTO felt very fake. Once you join, you find out that you’re only expected to take ~3 weeks a year, and if you try to take more, you need to provide a reason and they have to consider it worthy enough. Rather than saying they have unlimited PTO, they should say they have 3 weeks of PTO, with some flexibility for life situations.

Pros

Working at Garner Health as a software engineer was a fantastic experience. Two things really set this company apart: the mission and the people. First, the mission is genuinely impactful. It’s incredibly motivating to come to work every day knowing that the code you are writing directly helps people find high-quality, affordable healthcare. Second, the talent level across the engineering team is top-notch. I was constantly surrounded by smart, driven, and collaborative engineers who raised the bar and helped me grow technically. The culture is highly supportive, ownership is encouraged, and there is a real focus on building things the right way.

Cons

Like any fast-growing company, things move quickly and priorities can shift. You need to be comfortable with ambiguity and adaptable to change. These transitions could be handled better with clearer communication.

Pros

-A lot has changed at Garner in the last several years, for the better. There used to be a huge culture of micromanagement from the top down, and now that we’ve grown larger that has shifted -High value product with a ton of growth potential that’s actually making a difference -really great peers who are ambitious and mission-driven -good salaries -lots of opportunity if you like to build and iterate -interesting ever changing work -management that really cares about me

Cons

Your experience at Garner really depends on your department. Some work you to the bone, some have weak leadership, others are great. Working directly with the CEO is tough as he is more of a micromanager. My team doesn’t happen to have that issue or a work life balance issue so much, so my experience has generally been good. - low diversity, likes to recruit from consulting firms too much -if you aren’t efficient or don’t use the tools available, work life balance will suffer
