Pros

Being able to choose a research topic that you are interested in and you believe would make an impact. The stipend from the research assistantship is enough to cover the tuition, housing, health insurance and daily expenses.

Cons

The exact experience is highly dependent on the research advisor and your style of doing work. In some departments, you have to choose an advisor before your program starts.

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
