Pros

It has awesome name recognition. Just saying that you work for MIT makes people look at you differently. As a grad student, your schedule is also very flexible (for the most part).

Cons

It really depends on your adviser. Some advisers are really demanding and others aren't. Some look over your shoulder about everything and want to show you how to do every step. Others want to see you once a month and that's it. There are also those in between. Each style can be good if that is the way you work best. Choose wisely. It can mean the difference between bliss and misery.

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
