Pros

I love the team I work with at MIT. They are professional, driven and really know their work. Issues that arise are often some of the first in the industry, and it’s amazing to work with world-renowned scientist on groundbreaking technology. Work life balance is great as well-never feel pressured to work longer hours than necessary.

Cons

Pay is lower than private industry comparables but with all the benefits (excellent healthcare, vision and dental) and being a member of the MIT community, it makes up for the difference.

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
