Pros

MIT is known for world class people and resources, and for the most part this is true. It is a large institute with many exciting things going on.

Cons

The day to day experience of a grad student is largely dependent on the research advisor. Some good advice I received: make your graduate school selection on the following criteria in this order: 1) Advisor (personality and reputation, his/her research interests). 2) Research Project. 3) School Reputation

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
