Pros

As a foreign scholar I experienced MIT to be extremely professional handling all issues including visa, health care, etc. Money was enough to survive in Cambridge or Boston without problems. The atmosphere is amazing with lots of talks and visitors from my field and related fields all the time.

Cons

I did not find many cons. It depends on where you work exactly and who your boss is. It's definitely competitive but in a good way.

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
