Pros

Original product was a great idea and it used to be a great place to work with lots of great people. There are a ton of talented Narrative Science alums spread throughout the rest of the tech industry.

Cons

Doesn't pay anywhere close to market salaries, over a quarter of the employees have left in the last 6 months, and leadership is clueless.

We are disappointed to hear about your negative experience at Narrative Science. We work hard to ensure that our employees have a positive and rewarding experience during their time here. One aspect of that is making sure our compensation is competitive. As we share with employees in our compensation FAQ, we continuously benchmark our data to ensure our salaries are in line with the market based on each role and location. In addition, we offer a generous equity package and a range of other benefits. We recognize there is much more than compensation that goes into creating a great employee experience which is why we also encourage our employees to give continuous feedback through anonymous engagement surveys and anonymous questions. We use these communication channels to ensure that our leaders understand how people are feeling and can focus on constantly improving and creating a great experience for our team. Our turnover, particularly in our engineering function, has been higher than in years past but is still within a range that’s standard for technology companies of our size and stage. The reality with companies like Narrative Science is that change is the one constant and change often involves transitions (people being promoted, people electing to leave the company and people who are asked to leave). While it can certainly be hard to see people go, each departure gives us an opportunity to be forward looking with the way that we organize the company. Although you feel negative about the company today, I hope over time you will value the things that you learned at Narrative Science and the experience that you gained here. We appreciate your feedback and we will continue to work hard to make sure our employees are having a positive experience at Narrative Science.

Pros

Company has a great variety of talented and smart people who all are willing to help and support one another. Concept of NLG and its technological applications is very exciting to work on - you will learn something new every day. In addition, there is now an excellent network of company alumni in the Chicago area and beyond.

Cons

Salaries across the company are well below market for Chicago. In addition, there is a chronic communication problem between senior leadership and the rest of the company. This also included dismissal at all-hands meeting of internal issues (employee satisfaction, compensation, etc.) and external issues (e.g. competitor products/strategy). Diversity in talent was also communicated as a strategic priority for the company, but it has seemingly failed to deliver any sort of tangible progress or results on this matter in the last year and a half. In addition, leadership in the company (C-suite and SVP's) and on its Board of Directors is still predominantly male.

Thanks for leaving feedback on your experience at Narrative Science. Based on our compensation research and benchmarking, we believe our salaries are in line with the market for tech companies of our size in Chicago (as well as Seattle and New York where we have small offices). That being said, we are continuously refreshing this data to ensure we remain competitive. Your feedback is a good reminder that we need to keep this top of mind. From a diversity perspective, we have not seen a dramatic change in the demographic breakdown of our employee or board population in the last 1.5 years but we have taken action in a number of ways to ensure that we have a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment at Narrative Science. We’ve done this through educating our team on a variety of DEI related topics (such as unconscious bias, gender identity + pronouns, allyship) and engaging in community outreach and activities (by attending DEI events and building partnerships with organizations that increase awareness of opportunities in tech for underrepresented minorities). In addition, we’ve taken a hard look at our recruiting and general people practices and made adjustments to eliminate bias. It often takes time to see tangible results from this work but we are proud of what we’ve achieved to date and will continue to focus on action that will make us better. Lastly, we continue to work on communication and are constantly trying new methods of communication to ensure that everyone has the information they need, through the appropriate channels.
