Pros

Company has a great variety of talented and smart people who all are willing to help and support one another. Concept of NLG and its technological applications is very exciting to work on - you will learn something new every day. In addition, there is now an excellent network of company alumni in the Chicago area and beyond.

Cons

Salaries across the company are well below market for Chicago. In addition, there is a chronic communication problem between senior leadership and the rest of the company. This also included dismissal at all-hands meeting of internal issues (employee satisfaction, compensation, etc.) and external issues (e.g. competitor products/strategy). Diversity in talent was also communicated as a strategic priority for the company, but it has seemingly failed to deliver any sort of tangible progress or results on this matter in the last year and a half. In addition, leadership in the company (C-suite and SVP's) and on its Board of Directors is still predominantly male.

Narrative Science Response

Thanks for leaving feedback on your experience at Narrative Science. Based on our compensation research and benchmarking, we believe our salaries are in line with the market for tech companies of our size in Chicago (as well as Seattle and New York where we have small offices). That being said, we are continuously refreshing this data to ensure we remain competitive. Your feedback is a good reminder that we need to keep this top of mind. From a diversity perspective, we have not seen a dramatic change in the demographic breakdown of our employee or board population in the last 1.5 years but we have taken action in a number of ways to ensure that we have a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment at Narrative Science. We’ve done this through educating our team on a variety of DEI related topics (such as unconscious bias, gender identity + pronouns, allyship) and engaging in community outreach and activities (by attending DEI events and building partnerships with organizations that increase awareness of opportunities in tech for underrepresented minorities). In addition, we’ve taken a hard look at our recruiting and general people practices and made adjustments to eliminate bias. It often takes time to see tangible results from this work but we are proud of what we’ve achieved to date and will continue to focus on action that will make us better. Lastly, we continue to work on communication and are constantly trying new methods of communication to ensure that everyone has the information they need, through the appropriate channels.

Pros

Narrative Science provided me with a better internship experience than I ever thought possible. At Narrative Science, the phrase "it's the people that make a good company" isn't just a phrase, it's a reality. From the employees to the leadership team, all of the members of NS team are dedicated, focused, talented, and truly believe in the technology that they are working to produce. I came on board with the expectation of being an intern, and within a few short weeks, I already felt like a part of the team. The work that I was able to do there was meaningful, impactful, and challenging. I have grown exponentially from this experience, and I could not say more positive things about the company as a whole.

Cons

For me, the only negative aspect was having to leave NS to complete my degree. However, I think it is important to note that the Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Generation fields are rapidly changing and evolving. With this change in the field comes change within a company. NS rapidly evolves to keep up with (and stay ahead of) the changes in the market, which means that employees have to be comfortable with ambiguity, uncertainty, and forging a path that may be brand new. This was exciting for me and the other NS employees, but it may not be a perfect fit for everyone.
