Pros

Outstanding people. Employees are some of the most creative, fun, smart and humble individuals with whom I've worked. The technology is cutting edge and delivers value for customers in unique, high-impact ways. It is inspiring to bring data storytelling to life. The company is constantly evolving, which can be both a pro and con, depending upon a person's interests, strengths and experiences. A pro for those motivated by start-up culture, a con for those more comfortable in the familiar. No question, Narrative Science is evolving to meet the market and that requires a hefty lift through change for all. Beautiful office. I'm inspired walking into the space every day. Lots of natural light, open seating, (real) plants and large standing desks for everyone.

Cons

NS has been more inwardly focused the past few years bringing a new product to market and that can be taxing and tiresome for some. The frequent pivots and reorgs that come with this evolution can be hard, particularly for those to new start-ups or young in their careers. Leadership is working to improve its company communication so there is evidence of change, but of course this takes time.

Pros

Company has a great variety of talented and smart people who all are willing to help and support one another. Concept of NLG and its technological applications is very exciting to work on - you will learn something new every day. In addition, there is now an excellent network of company alumni in the Chicago area and beyond.

Cons

Salaries across the company are well below market for Chicago. In addition, there is a chronic communication problem between senior leadership and the rest of the company. This also included dismissal at all-hands meeting of internal issues (employee satisfaction, compensation, etc.) and external issues (e.g. competitor products/strategy). Diversity in talent was also communicated as a strategic priority for the company, but it has seemingly failed to deliver any sort of tangible progress or results on this matter in the last year and a half. In addition, leadership in the company (C-suite and SVP's) and on its Board of Directors is still predominantly male.

Thanks for leaving feedback on your experience at Narrative Science. Based on our compensation research and benchmarking, we believe our salaries are in line with the market for tech companies of our size in Chicago (as well as Seattle and New York where we have small offices). That being said, we are continuously refreshing this data to ensure we remain competitive. Your feedback is a good reminder that we need to keep this top of mind. From a diversity perspective, we have not seen a dramatic change in the demographic breakdown of our employee or board population in the last 1.5 years but we have taken action in a number of ways to ensure that we have a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment at Narrative Science. We’ve done this through educating our team on a variety of DEI related topics (such as unconscious bias, gender identity + pronouns, allyship) and engaging in community outreach and activities (by attending DEI events and building partnerships with organizations that increase awareness of opportunities in tech for underrepresented minorities). In addition, we’ve taken a hard look at our recruiting and general people practices and made adjustments to eliminate bias. It often takes time to see tangible results from this work but we are proud of what we’ve achieved to date and will continue to focus on action that will make us better. Lastly, we continue to work on communication and are constantly trying new methods of communication to ensure that everyone has the information they need, through the appropriate channels.
