Pros

Staff at or below mid-management really care about the work the do and the citizens they do it for.

Cons

Management has no interest (or ability) to provide the necessary resources and tools for lower level staff to succeed. The finance department is ill-equipped, ill-trained, and ill-prepared to provide support for staff dependent on finance to do their jobs. The Human Resources department is severely siloed and, unless you are in the process of being hired, are incapable of providing support to staff who have legitimate HR complaints. Last, but certainly not least, there are too many distractions at the upper management level preventing the real issues facing the city (crumbling infrastructure, poor public perception) from being addressed: a pointless class and compensation study, an esoteric purchasing ordinance requiring equally esoteric and lengthy training, and high staff turnover/vacancies. The City of Oxnard has proven time and time again that when they do hire talented people, they have no issue letting them go.

Pros

Employees are hard workers who are ethical and not afraid of complex tasks, long hours, and sacrificing family time on holidays. Pay is good if you’re willing to do overtime.

Cons

Being here on time, every scheduled shift, is non-negotiable. If you want a job where your work-life balance can be a priority or you want to be online all day this may not be for you.
