Pros

Good paid, no OT paid restriction if you OT. Instant promotion when you qualify. Numerous good knowledge management available online.

Cons

1. Section manager are typical Singaporean kids- obedient to Department Manager. 2. One colleague make a mistake, Department Manager will set new rule to follow. 3. Department Manager always right, he is the law regardless any official contract you have signed with UMC. 4. Lack of official training, they just give you some one and only sample to execute even you do not have any experience to handle it, if failed, Mis-Operation will be issued. 5.Forced staff to execute not reasonable timeline project by asking you possible timeline, if you propose 3 month, they say too long. Keep ask you discount till their desired timeline. Afterward, they took your words say you have committed to the short timeline. 6.Tons of not reasonable rules to obey, if someone accidentally break it, more new rule will be set. 7. Multiple miscellaneous side activities, paper work, checklist to be take care. If missed, money penalty will be execute. 8. Old equipment that always down, but they will ask you QBQ( Question Behind the Question) what can I do to complete my task even equipment down. But seems the management never QBQ themself. 9. Force employee to disclose their personal issue, then make an announcement at laboratory. 10. Difficult to take leave, numerous rule even with flow chart.

Pros

UMC is a traditional company with a lot of job security. They try very hard to not have to lay off any employees (it's seen as a place where you can work until retirement). Also, given the size of its business (large for a Taiwanese company), it affords a lot of different experiences to its employees. It is seen as prestigious (in Taiwan) and since it has fabs in many different countries, you will have travel experiences as well. Good vacation package and benefits package. Also, there is good work life balance. Finally, there is a good mix of younger and older employees.

Cons

There is a lot of internal politics and bureaucracy. This sometimes makes it quite hard to get the information needed to complete a project or to implement anything cross functional. Also, like many other big companies, promotions can sometimes be more about who know rather than what you know. There is a heavy emphasis on seniority within the company and there are cases where it seems that if you've been around long enough, you will be given management opportunities over someone who is more capable. This creates dissatisfaction among the most valuable junior employees and contributes to higher turnover and attrition.
