I'm sorry to hear that you had issues with your manager. It's been a long time since I read To Kill a Mockingbird in Mrs. Boersma's ninth grade English class, but I do remember one of the central messages--you don't really understand someone until you walk in their shoes. In that spirit, I'll assure you having walked in the shoes of our Directors that they do quite a bit of important work. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not happening.
On your concern on forward mobility, I'll just let the numbers speak for themselves. We've had 39 internal promotions in the last 18 months. That's in a company of a little over 200 people--put another way, about 20% of the company has gotten a promotion in the last 18 months.
I totally understand your concern on the workload. It's hard to balance client needs, client wishes and client budgets. But that's a challenge for every professional service firm.
