Good work-life balance, but unclear company direction - Software Engineer Zopa Employee Review

Pros

Very good work life balance, you don't hear about people working beyond 5PM other than on the week of new product launches and it's usually made up to those involved pretty well. Nice new office although it feels like we've outgrown it already at times. Some upper management seem very energetic

Cons

Despite the energy the company feels a bit directionless. There's a vague goal of "home of money" but that doesn't really connect with me in terms of actual direction for the company. The company is moving towards AWS with typescript but still focusing on hiring Kotlin developers, but we don't really have TS developers who could do the interviewing. There's a big push to AWS serverless but people are confused when you say you're adopting it?

Pros

I was employed and receiving a salary

Cons

My experience at Zopa was not a pleasant experience and that has what has been the reality for most of the employees within the business. There are talented and hardworking people across the business, and some teams genuinely care about both customer outcomes and employee development. However, from my perspective, there were also challenges around consistency in leadership support, performance management, and how operational realities were understood across different functions. I would strongly encourage prospective candidates to ask detailed questions during the interview process about: how performance is measured how support functions are valued leadership stability workload expectations how concerns or feedback are handled internally I would also encourage candidates to read reviews critically and look at longer-term patterns across departments rather than relying solely on recent headline ratings. Experiences can vary significantly depending on team, reporting line, and timing, and some highly positive reviews did not align with what I personally observed during my time there. For some people and teams, the company may still offer valuable opportunities, but I believe it is important that candidates carry out thorough due diligence before joining. The outstanding reviews here, seem to pop up as soon as a negative review is posted.
