Company on the decline

Pros

* Hardworking employees * Decent benefits, including onsite fitness center, paid time off, subsidized cafeteria * Interesting subject matter--sports, fitness, and health * Pleasant physical working conditions. Clean, health-focused environment.

Cons

* Company hasn't successfully adapted to a changing publishing environment. * Online and web presence is embarrassing. Website and courses are unappealing and very difficult to use. * Management is not very creative, and only recently made a commitment to new forms of electronic media. * No employer contributions to 401(K). ESOP shares provided to employees have drastically fallen in value. * Two rounds of layoffs in the past decade. * Top-down management. Suggestions from rank-and-file employees are typically dismissed.

Pros

The benefits they offer are nice: good health insurance, there's a work out area, they offer various health classes, they have a courtyard with a basketball court, and the onsite cafeteria is nice.

Cons

There was a lot of back stabbing in this company, but I think the thing I disliked the most was their distrust of employees. There was a wide range of distrust, and I understand that the HR department was at one point instructed to spy on employees. Upper management never gave the impression of having faith in any of the lower level employees and the overall atmosphere was tense. I've known MANY employees (both former and current) who were written up for something either made up or taken out of context and I believe they used this as a scare tactic to keep employees in line. While there, I saw multiple employees get forced out of the company because one person (usually the same person) didn't like them and made it a mission to remove them from the company.

It all depends on which department you work in.

Pros

Great benefits, lots of great people that work there. Onsite workout area and classes, free books if you're an employee, social events. Cafeteria, though it's not as healthy as they promote. Free soda.

Cons

Their technology is disconnected. The systems don't talk to each other and it causes confusion and a LOT of extra work. Upper management folks often have ego issues and look the other way when employees try to bring significant problems to their attention. A lot of incompetent people in leadership. They try to promote from within, but the people are often not skilled at managing people in a positive way.
