    I worked at ICANN full-time

    Pros

11 years at ICANN opened my eyes to the Internet space in terms of Policy, Protocol and Security of the Internet we all take for granted. Very positive work environment though can be stressful at times due to demands of the work and information needed by the global community..well worth it

    Cons

Can be 24/7 if you allow it

I have been working at ICANN (More than a year)

    Pros

Prestigious company in a great location.

    Cons

    Seems to wander aimlessly often...

    Advice to Management

Maybe you should meet with your contractors and actually manage them...

    I worked at ICANN full-time

    Pros

Excellent benefits that suppose to compensate for all the misery and stress the company has to offer to the employees.

    Cons

A stressful place to work. Dishonest people in management, lots of political movements. Morale is extremely low. Hardworking individuals leave eventually unable to coupe with the tension; unqualified people get promoted. Management is extremely subjective and unsupportive. "Compassion and care" are not part of the business in the company and finance department. Everything is about "the process". Eventually you will be "processed out" or run away on your own...

    Advice to Management

When people constantly complaining, taking legal actions, fleeing out of the department, temps back filling numerous positions - something is wrong with the management!

    I worked at ICANN full-time

    Pros

Great compensation package. Opportunity to travel and work with some great people across the globe.

    Cons

Long hard hours. Management that is incapable of acting decisively.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire department directors from the Domain Industry that have never worked remotely, nor managed a remote team and then let them work remotely.

I have been working at ICANN full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fascinating to understand how the Internet works and the Global Multi Stakeholder model. Lots of opportunity to bring good ideas for improvement and best practices. Really smart people that care about the mission.

    Cons

Takes long time for decisions to be made. Some dysfunctional areas that are led by ego and politics rather than business. More accountability and action to eliminate bad leaders that lead to lower morale and blockers to progress.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees and show actions that are clear and address the reported problems contributing to low morale.

"Interesting Work, Nepotism Alive and Well, Lousy Management"

I have been working at ICANN full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The work is highly challenging, smart people, unique company like no other in the world, interesting mix of highly technical people, legal talent and everything in between. A bottoms up policy organization with the two largest groups of professionals either having law or engineering degrees. Smart people, learn something new everyday.

    Cons

Far and few respected executive managers. Management is out of touch, get promoted based on relationships, politics, nepotism and incompetence far far far more than other organizations. This company operates like a out-of-control insane 20 person start-up. With a shake-up in management maybe it will grow up to behave like the medium size organization it is.

    Advice to Management

    Clean house
Realize who should actually be in management and promote them! Tons and tons of managment does not make for good leadership. Less managers, real leaders would go a long way to make this the great organization it should be.

I worked at ICANN full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working at ICANN provided a sort of wake-up call into how demanding the tech industry and internet security sector can be. People were quite friendly and the staff holiday party was beautiful. PTO was fair and actually quite generous. There is a lot to learn if you like tech and internet security. Public meetings are held around the world, so the opportunity for travel exists, though it isn't promised.

    Cons

Seems that there is a lot of turnaround with some supervisors, but overall, most assistants are career assistants. Tech is not the easiest subject to learn coming from a different background, and many peers were not willing to help others understand what their line of work was.

    Pros

Opportunities to make a direct impact to worldwide internet policy. Great staff, lots of professionalism, extra sharp minds.

    Cons

Experience really depends on what manager you work for
Some lousy managers driving people out

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff not your managers, they are the ones that really know what is going on. Make it safe for them to give you feedback.

    Advice to Management

    Fire yourselves.

"Be wary of working for this bureaucracy under the disguise of a startup"

I worked at ICANN (More than a year)

    Pros

It was exciting to be a part of a community that cares deeply about what they are doing and is very knowledgeable about the topic on which they are working in-depth.

    Cons

This huge bureaucracy is not very organized for being a "tech" company. HR was a mess and the work was mundane. Senior management took years to figure out what it was doing, even under clear direction from Fadi Chehade. Not much opportunity to move up when employees are specialists and will likely stay in their positions for decades.

    Advice to Management

Words I often heard were "think of our company like we're a startup" which was supposed to excuse any chaos that new employees experienced -- even so, you still need to account for the 15 years your organization has been in existence or at least chart out your vision for future progress. Good luck!
