I have been working at LAPD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You get to make a difference in the community. Great career that can open many doors. Good salary and benefits.

    Cons

Public perception of what an officer does compared to what you actually do. The police commissioners suck and I wish they would do a ride along instead of furthering their own agendas

    Advice to Management

Support patrol officers and make them a priority instead of special interests.

I worked at LAPD full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Meaningful job with real life changing potential for self and others. Gives you a different outlook on jobs and makes you appreciate a violence free work space.

    Cons

work environment very tough for families especially during probation. New officers very dependent on whims of trainers or instructors with out the protection of union until the probation period

    Advice to Management

Try to be less like the Marines in the beginning and more like a modern police organization. Also reduce the politics internally.

I have been working at LAPD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Diverse assignments, really busy, extremely professional, great training

    Cons

The system is not fair, and people connected to command staff face different discipline. Too many special events that are covered by on-duty officers that should be done on overtime. This depletes patrol officers and makes it dangerous in the field due to low deployment.

    Advice to Management

Have more respect for your employees and occasionally leave your office so you can be in touch with what officers have to contend with day in and day out.

    Pros

Great place to work overall. The benefits are extraordinary, and the pay is decent, and only getting better. Great way to network and a great way to see the world at its best and at its worst. Depending on the division you go, you will either flourish or sink.

    Cons

Some of the training officers at West Valley Division think they are Gods. They will do whatever they can to try and get you out of the department as a probationer if you rub them the wrong way. And then they will make it seem as if you are the one with the problem...it's standard politics that definitely needs to be monitored more closely.

    Advice to Management

Supervisors should not always side with the Training Officers when it comes to issues with probationers, it turns it into a hostile work environment and makes people not want to be there. I think they fail to see that the probationers themselves hold the same exact authority as the Training Officers, but yet they get accused of everything, especially at West Valley Division...So much for integrity in all we do and say. Get your act together supervisors, and ensure that your training officers aren't screwing over the probationer just as I was.

I worked at LAPD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Los Angeles Police Depart offers a great opportunity to anyone seeking a career in Law Enforcement. There is a wealth of experience to gain with a Law Enforcement Agency with over 20 geographical patrol division, serving the greater Los Angeles County. There are also countless specialized, investigative divisions, from which to chose,

    Cons

One obvious negative, is the current perception of Law Enforcement in general. There are some citizen, politician, and media outlets, who will often anticipate the worse and ignore the best.

    Advice to Management

I can honestly say, the Los Angeles Police Department takes extreme pride in the selection and promotion process, when it comes to selection the best qualified managers and supervisors.

I have been working at LAPD (More than a year)

    Pros

Interesting casework as it is in Los Angeles. Good pace, not over worked.

    Cons

Can be repetitive in tasks. Besides the occasional interesting casework, daily casework is very mundane.
