I have been working at Liquid Robotics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A unique and fascinating product that challenges all engineering disciplines as its capabilities are continuously expanded. Many exceptional co-workers in all departments - it's surprising how many very talented people with valuable experience have been attracted to this small firm.

    Cons

Slow sales growth in the past has kept the company from expanding, but recent events suggest we are about to enter a significant growth phase.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course and continue to refine product development focus to minimize efforts expended on products that do not have significant growth potential.

I have been working at Liquid Robotics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

We're building really cool, unique technology that is being deployed all over the world. Business is good and increasing rapidly.

On the engineering side, most of the senior management and staff have been in the industry for a long time and are really good at what they do. Schedules are mostly reasonable and tasks are usually achievable. This isn't a silicon valley sweatshop full of new grads working stupid hours until they burn out.

    Cons

There's a -lot- to learn when you get in the door, and a lot of enthusiastic customers who need you to learn faster.

There's less communication between Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing and Support than there ought to be, probably because the company is just getting large enough that old informal methods aren't sufficient anymore. Quarterly all-hands meetings communicate business information, but the technical interchange that ought to happen at lower levels frequently doesn't. We're working on it.

    Advice to Management

Make retention plans (promotions, bonuses, stock grants, raises) clearer. They seem alternately random and nonexistent.

    Cons

Haven't been here long enough to see any downsides.

I have been working at Liquid Robotics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The big idea. The ocean will be managed and monitored with automation, and this technology is key to making that real.

Management has learned to focus, and the company is maturing on multiple levels.

The company is a crossroad for multiple industries: oil & gas, defense, science, fisheries... and is as global as it's possible to be.

Working with the ocean is awesome.

    Cons

In creating a market, the company has had taken its hits. The business model has shifted, it has to prove itself constantly, and building a business opportunity that can close in a new market takes hard long hours of work.

Because they're 24/7/365, problems with operations are not respectful of holiday or weekends, and the phone can ring at any time.

    Advice to Management

Look to your employees, they're a huge asset. Trust them and enable them and you'll see great things.

    Pros

Dynamic environment with some amazing people trying to accomplish some truly interesting stuff. The Sunnyvale office houses pretty much the entire operation, so its nice that you can talk to different functional groups very easily by just walking across the building.

    Cons

Can be a little disorganized with sometimes ambiguous roles and authority. People tend to shuffle through the firm pretty quickly once they've received their stock options. It's also somewhat difficult to move around the company once you are in a certain role.

I have been working at Liquid Robotics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, very little office politics, no big egos, interesting work, the occasional trip to Hawaii, seems to be on the right trajectory.

    Cons

The cost of living in Silicon Valley can be a bit of a downer if you're coming from somewhere else. On the other hand, there are tremendous professional opportunities in this area.

    Advice to Management

The people managers at this company are fantastic. I'm not sure I have any advice for them. My only advice for the executive team would be to try to maintain the small-company feel. Difficult, I know.

I worked at Liquid Robotics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Simply awesome technology with a real chance to impact the world. Operations base in Hawaii is a sweet place to visit.

    Cons

The Silicon Valley approach to growing a company seems to be one size fits all. Ocean robots are supposed to sell like (and be sold by the same techniques) as iPhones and software.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your customers and members of your team who understand the market. Consider adjusting expectations to be more like competing companies in your market (vs. other high growth startups).

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Liquid Robotics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company has great technology and potential to make ocean data collection safe, cheap and real-time.

    Cons

Things other than the core technology- personal growth is discouraged and professional growth is non-existent (less that 3% of the company have received promotions). Pay is on the low side of the start-up scale and stock options are pitifully meager. Office politics are strong and there is a very noticeable and distinct "Us" and "Them" -if you are on the them side you will get get a knife in the back.

Company culture is more interested in playing withe the cool technology than it is with making a good product or helping our customers succeed. This can make for fun days but not a great way to build a business or get the technology adopted. Very, very little time and energy is spend on anything other that marketing and R&D.

However the most con of the cons is leadership- The rules don't apply to leadership and their pets- they can travel in style, order excessive and expensive wine, miss quota time after time after time, fail to make any progress on product development and there are no consequences. Leadership cultivates pets who are not expected to contribute in trade for fierce loyalty, and others end up shouldering the pets work. The sloppy leadership trickle down to the rank and file and you find that LRI rarely takes accountability for anything.. wrong products delivered, unfulfilled contracts, and personnel lawsuits are a result. Individuals too are held unaccountable...until they want to fire someone- 5 group layoffs in the last year, each one was promised to be the last...
