    Pros

Great place....particularly for diversity of regulatory and scientific work to deal with. A lot to learn on the regulatory front. Flexible as well (up to 3 days from working home).

    Cons

Salary/career progression limited after reaching Senior grade. It can become an issue as salary increases only 1% a year...therefore people, good people, are obliged to leave.

Bonuses (if/when you get one...good luck!) are a joke really! Very little money in comparison with the private sector.

    Advice to Management

Try to convey a strong and clear message to Ministers to review MHRA salaries and highlighting the need of retaining highly skilled staff. Recruitment (e.g. up to 9 posts currently advertised for junior assessors) to address this issue of skilled Senior assessors leaving the Agency is not the way forward...

    Learn from previous mistakes.

    Pros

Good on the CV. Government bonuses. Flexible working hours. Pay is quite good. Location and transfer ability of skills. Wide variety of work mates and educations.

    Cons

Temporary contract so no job security. seems as if there is little to no ability to climb the ladder to better employment opportunities.

I worked at MHRA (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This should be the best job in the world. You are there to help patients and drive improvement in medicine. Some pros:
    diverse teams
    flexible working
    great mission statement
    central London location
    job security

    Cons

The culture at MHRA is appalling. Management is completely disengaged and people go there to do the bare minimum. Staff are constantly made the scapegoat for inefficient business processes or poor management decisions. There are layers upon layers of managers and not a single leader in sight. You either decide to "play the game" and shut your mouth or leave. There is no tolerance of improvement suggestions and all continuous improvement ideas are quickly eliminated. Workers are made to feel like drones- simply doing what they are told and if anything goes wrong they are blamed regardless of what they were told to do. Inexperienced managers are often promoted beyond their capabilities and run around with their hair on fire making massive crises out of nothing. Staff are entirely dis-empowered.

The public image of "protect public health" is a joke. The MHRA spends most of their time protecting their own image than fulfilling its mission. I have never heard the term "we need to be SEEN to be doing the right thing" used so often in my entire career.

Work loads are unmanageable and risky. Staff are often so overloaded they cannot possibly do the job assigned- often for long periods with management awareness. I have seen departments 150% loaded for two years with little or no support. I have seen staff physically ill and affected as a result. Operational & customer-facing staff are so demoralized that they actively avoid raising issues for fear of workload repercussions.

Pay is significantly lower than the private sector. This is usually accepted by staff joining the MHRA, as they join to help the public. Unfortunately, the public sector pay has been frozen for years (below inflation) and will continue to be frozen indefinitely. add to that the crippling pension reforms and increased pension costs and take-home pay has been significantly eroded. This is not disclosed to new recruits- i have seen at least two staff specifically as if there were pay freezes or reforms underway and be told "no"- despite whats happening.

    To summarize:

    Terrible culture
    Terrible management
    No Leadership
    No job prospects/career progression
    High and often dangerous workloads
    Terrible Pay & Benefits
    No likelihood of changing

I have been working at MHRA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility, holiday, variety, able to build experience quickly and understand how decisions and interpretations of regulations are made, opportunities to cross train

    Cons

Lack of pay rises, workload can be high, working for civil service can be frustrating when it comes to changing processes.

I have been working at MHRA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The role makes an active and positive contribution to public health. Dealing with the leading edge of medical science. Very dedicated staff with a wide range of clinical, non-clinical, statistical and scientific expertise. The organisation has very high ethical standards. Its very interesting and varied work.

    Cons

Very few, there is flexible working and they are a benign employer. The pay and benefits are less than in industry. There is career progression from assessor to acredited assessor to senior assessor and after that there are a few expert positions or management roles. You will be working for the "bureaucracy" so expect it to be bureaucratic.

    Advice to Management

The management team do a good job and are approachable, but as part of the Civil Service they have limited opportunity to change the pay and conditions and this is generally recognised within the organisation. They have removed many of the impediments that prevent the Asessor just getting on with the job of assessing the medicines, this was a good thing and should be continued.
