I have been working at MarketWatch full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is an awesome place to start your career. The pay is pretty good by journalism standards.
You get a lot of freedom in what stories you want to write about, so even if your beat is X, if you are interested in topic Y, as long as it's an interesting story you can report on it. If you are proactive, you can easily network with people at The Wall Street Journal. They are also flexible about working arrangements (working from home, flexible hours) and vacation time.

    Cons

There is no emphasis placed on good management practices or manager training. Because of that, it's unclear how to get promoted or get any type of career growth. I've worked with managers who were uncommunicative and passive aggressive. Additionally, the managers have adopted an attitude of "everything's fine" without recognizing issues and working on how to fix them. They have failed to communicate any long-term vision for the site's growth. MarketWatch is a great place to start your career, but once you have the clips and work experience you want, the only way to advance your career is to take your clips and move somewhere else.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with your employees and care about helping them grow rather than just adopting the "Everything is fine" attitude

It's a great job for young reporters looking to gain experience. Pay is generous.

Traffic is often seen as the priority.

I worked at MarketWatch as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very hands on. People will listen to your ideas and encourage you to pitch. The team is so cool and helpful, genuinely nice people that want to get it right.

    Cons

It's in NYC. That's a con because I would prefer not to be in NY, but honestly, that was the only con for me.

    I worked at MarketWatch full-time

    Pros

Probably still a decent place to begin a financial journalism career
    Several good people remain
Other employers do take note of the MarketWatch and Dow Jones names, so there is resume value

    Cons

The people in the best position to run the site have not been placed into those roles
Too much of the site has been given over to commentary
Not much chance to do interesting features; too many bland market stories with information readily available elsewhere
If management adds responsibilities to your plate, there is no understanding that others may have to be curtailed or eliminated

    Advice to Management

Let the remaining staffers who helped build the site pre-Dow Jones run it. MarketWatch had a unique role in providing financial news to both the average unsophisticated investor and the institutional investor, and management understood how to serve both constituencies.
