Pros

Freedom to work on your own project. Excellent travel support to attend conference, workshops, visit other institutes. doing research on cutting-edge subjects

Cons

This is a research institute and should not compare with a university environment, students should be faster. The students should work very independently and there is no much help from senior people.

Pros

Virtually unlimited resources, e.g., equipment and funding for research Very competent and friendly support staff (HR, IT Service, Procurement ...) A lot of opportunities to meet top tier researchers from your field and other fields

Cons

Salary is 25 to 30% percent less than Ph.D. researchers in other German universities. Located in a small city with not very good connections to airports

Pros

- free laptop (macbook air or similar price range) - travel budget allows to travel to any conference with an accepted paper + 1 free travel w/o a paper

Cons

- the whole contracts / stipends (scholarships) / salary business is extremely shady and absolutely not transparent to students (luckily, there are no more scholarships - only dubious contracts) - most students work 40h+ a week, but have only part-time contracts for no good reason - you get only 20 vacation days on the part time contract instead of 30, which is Germany-wide standard - due to the above, some departments allow shady schemes with the "unofficial" 10 days of leave, but others do not - the graduation requirements are often not clear, and the grade even more so
